| Description |
You are invited to join us for a day of meditation in the peaceful environment of the Sakya Buddhist Centre, Bristol.Everyone is welcome to join all, or any, of the four sessions – there is no need to book, just drop in on the day:
No experience is necessary, just an interest in Buddhist meditation, and a willingness to learn the method of meditation and apply yourself to practising it for an hour long session. “When the mind is placed in stillness, wisdom naturally arises” Meditation is one of the methods taught by the Buddha to help us discover the causes of happiness. The Buddha taught that happiness does not come from outer progress in the material world, but from taking an inner journey, or spiritual path, which can help us to understand the nature of mind and to learn how to create the causes of happiness in our lives, and to avoid the causes of suffering. This day will focus on the meditation practice called “calm-abiding”, which is often one of the first steps taken by people interested in Buddhist meditation. With practice over time, the meditation can help to develop a calm and spacious mind, making our lives much easier. We can also develop the clarity and focus required to take things further on the Buddhist path, if we wish, to develop insight into the true nature of reality, and lasting happiness. Instruction on the meditation will be given, for those new to the practice, but this is also a chance for those attending the different meditation classes and pujas in Bristol and beyond to meet up and spend time together – so all are very welcome. The breaks can be spent in the garden and social spaces at the Centre, with St Andrews Park just over the road for those wishing to stretch their legs. There is a chance to ask questions about meditation and Buddhism, and to meet people with experience of both. Tea and coffee will be available; please bring a packed lunch. There is no charge for the day, but donations are welcome. Tel: (0)117 924 4424
